STATEMENT:
I am a painter whose imagery is based on the landscape. My work
is not about an exact rendering of a subject, nor am I interested
in recognizable shape. My art is based on collected experiences
and memories of having lived in such close association with nature
.
Growing up in a small outport of northern Newfoundland has given
me a great love and respect for the environment and the ever-changing
drama of the land and the sea.
I saw how the earth is upturned and bruised by heavy winds, rain,
sleet, and snow. I remember how the ocean is constantly moving,
churning with activity, whipped by the weather. I spent hours watching
waves crashing and foaming on rocks. I still hear the sounds of
ice breaking up in the spring, still see the shimmering colors of
the waters in the summer winds birds skimming sea surfaces,
pods of whales breaching, gigantic icebergs flowing by.
My artwork is a response to this natural world with all its beauties,
diversities, and hostilities. The paintings emerge like a performance
of nature itself
I pick, I scrape, I slash, and I leave my
mark on my surfaces.
Each painting is an act of remembering.
