Karina Kraenzle

Karina Kraenzle is a photo-based artist working in a variety of media. Her most recent pieces employ old, found photographs, that are reworked in various ways on paper, canvas or wood. The result is a melancholy contemplation of photography’s relationship to the passage of time and the elusive quality of memory. Karina lives and works in Ottawa and currently shows her work at Blink Gallery and La Petite Mort Gallery.

Statement

When a photograph is placed in the middle of a painting, the meaning of each medium is changed a little — perhaps, in part, due to the fact that each has a different relationship to time. One is a record of a brief, unconscious moment addressed to no one in particular; while the other is a deliberate, conscious appeal to a future spectator. Juxtaposed, they comment on one another in interesting ways — many of which I have yet to discover.

We’re here and then wešre gone — our presence in a fast-paced, technology-driven world appears to us to be more fleeting than ever. And many of the images that we see around us reflect that perspective on our existence. I combine media in ways that are meant to address these issues of flux and loss, and the ways in which we seek to preserve time and record our presence — thereby helplessly confirming our absence.
